A bona fide star of the British drum n bass scene, South West London native Mark Wilkinson is the chart conquering, multi award winning, platinum selling producer being touted by many as one the most successful artists in electronic music.
From a young age, the burgeoning virtuoso displayed a keen interest in music, performing in a handful of bands at venues across the country (most notably Birmingham’s NEC Arena). It wasn’t until he was 14, however, that he discovered his passion for dance music with a particular disposition for drum n bass. The rest, as they say, is history.
Wilkinson subsequently traded in his acoustic instrument for a digital counterpart, his first beat sequencer, and set about building his own bed room studio, much to the delight of his parents and neighbours no doubt. He joined a music production course at his local college and began honing the skills he would later use to create his acclaimed catalogue of work.
Outgrowing the confides of his bed room, Wilkinson moved his operation to a fully functioning studio where he would record ‘Hypnosis’, a seminal track which opened many doors for the then adolescent producer. The frantic drum n bass banger was added to Hospital Records’ compilation ‘Sick Music 2’, gaining Wilkinson widespread exposure to the global, diehard drum n bass community.
His reputation as a growing talent eventually caught the attention of one the scenes most eminent producers, RAM Records head honcho Andy C who offered Wilkinson his first contract in 2010. That same year, Wilkinson released 12” single ‘Moonwalker’ and his first chart breaking single ‘Need to Know’, later going on to win the award for Best Breakthrough Producer at the UK’s National D&B Awards in 2012.
Wilkinson’s debut album ‘Lazers Not Included’, released via RAM Records in 2013, propelled his status to an unprecedented level. Including singles ‘Half Light’ and ‘Afterglow’, which became a top 5 hit on the UK Chart, selling over 500,000 copies, the record would go on to achieve the top spot of the iTunes dance chart. As a result, Wilkinson found himself performing to huge audiences across the globe on a jam-packed touring schedule. He’s appeared on stage at the legendary Glastonbury Festival, Reading and Leeds Festival, London’s Wireless Festival and on multiple occasions in mega clubs across the dance island mecca of Ibiza.
Now signed to major label Virgin EMI, the drum n bass high-flyer continues to build upon his already outstanding credentials. His most recent full-length releases, 2017’s greatly anticipated ‘Hypnotic’ and this year’s collaborative effort alongside long-time collaborator Sub focus, Portals, have both clocked up millions of streams and sales, acquiring fans amongst some of the most prominent names in music, including tastemaker Zane Lowe, dubstep hero Skrillex and, believe it or not, Elton John! He’s also produced and remixed tracks for the likes of Ed Sheeran, Chase & Status, Wretch 32, Katy B, Laura Mvula and Becky Hill to name but a select few. Quite a list we think you’ll agree.
