Born out of Manchester’s culturally diverse and prolifically creative music scene comes one of the UK’s most in demand brass band ensembles – Riot Jazz Brass Band.
Directed by jazz trumpet virtuoso Nick Walters, the multi component collective have become widely known for their accomplished, genre-defying sound and always raucous, one-of-a-kind live performances (said to make even the most stubborn of crowd members dance involuntarily).
Formed in 2008 and consisting of three trumpeters, three trombonists, a drummer, a sousaphone player and one master of ceremonies – the prodigious MC CHUNKY, the versatile troupe were initially inspired by a host of similar brass acts – including the likes of New Orleans based outfit Hot 8 Brass Band and the hip hop inspired Young Blood Brass Band.
Skilfully fusing the many elements and influences that make up the group with a variety of musical styles – from jazz, funk and hip hop, to reimagined dubstep, drum n bass and classic dance, Riot Jazz Brass Band have masterfully honed and articulated their own unique sound. A sound which continues to captivate audiences far and wide today.
The band regularly receive requests on an annual basis to appear at some of the biggest musical events in the calendar across the UK and Europe, with highlights including Glastonbury, WOMAD, Love Supreme and Croatia’s Soundwave Festival. They’ve opened up for an array of esteemed musical legends on tour, from the likes of Dizzee Rascal to The Wailers and The Streets, and have collaborated in the studio with rapper Plan B, Drum n Bass figurehead Tony Colman a.k.a London Elektricity, and multifaceted production don, Swindle to name a select few.
