Monki played her first ever DJ set aged just 17. Over ten years later she has become one of the most saught after names in electronic music. Her musical beginnings saw her have an obsession with pirate radio. A love of music and radio lead her to gaining a work placement at Radio Jackie.
Whilst there, she was successful in getting an internship with Rinse FM, the legendary London broadcaster. She spent her time there working her way up and eventually was rewarded with her own Thursday morning slot.
She was so successful with this that it didn’t take too long to nab a promotion to a prime time Saturday slot. Her musical background also involves time spent at music school Point Blank and this combined with all the radio experience led her towards the BBC.
Initially gaining monthly slots on ‘In DJs We Trust’, she was then invited to do a weekly slot on 1Xtra. Again, this was not the peak of her powers as she was then called up to host her own Radio 1 show which she did so for 6 years.
Respected as a key electronic music tastemaker, Monki embarked on a new radio show with Defected in 2019 which is downloaded by millions worldwide. Her own prescence as a live performer has gone from strength to strength and has been a regular fixture at legendary clubs such as Fabric and The Warehouse Project.
Monki has built up a far reaching career and is constantly expanding her portfolio. Releasing music on her own imprint & Friends which was started in 2018. Also releasing on other well respected labels such as Jamie Jones’ Hottrax.
You can catch Monki performing at this year’s Highest Point festival on Friday 3rd September and be prepared to see a set of incredible electronic music.
