In terms of “DIY approach” Sam Divine’s beginnings can very much claim such a tag. Initially stitching together a couple of belt drive turntables and a knackered Numark mixer, Sam set up shop in her mum’s shed aged 21. She later went on to host a pirate radio show broadcasted from her bedroom using ‘borrowed’ equipment from the local college.
Her first-ever residency was in a club in Weston-super-Mare whilst balancing a job at Spin Central, the local record store. In 2005, she swapped out her local for Ibiza originally as the sole member of the Defected street team and has spent every season on the island since.
In 2009 she was signed to the roster at Defected which saw her opening for the likes of Kenny Dope and Frankie Knuckles and began hosting the weekly Defected Radio show. Her big breakthrough came in 2013 when she played at We Are FSTVL, dropping the mix the night before, it was the first time she had packed out a festival.
So the bookings started to come thick and fast, she’s now played on some of the biggest and best stages around the world with appearances at Creamfields, Tomorrowland, Defected Croatia and more.
Alongside her DJ work, Sam rarely takes a break and has been running her own label D-Vine Sounds since 2015. She’s also been dipping her toes into the realms of production, her first major release being a remix of garage anthem ‘Flowers’ with Curtis Gabriel.
Alongside her career, she has also been hosting annual events called ‘La Vita’, a DJ charity event that raises money for Breast Cancer Research and has donated over £40,000.
Sam Divine has come a long way from the shed that she first honing her craft. Now associated with some of the biggest names and stages in the world. You can catch her bringing a high-octane set to Highest Point on Friday September 3rd.
